What does it take to build AI that works for people and communities often overlooked by today’s technologies? This video tells the story of Project Gecko, a collaboration exploring how AI can be built around the languages, knowledge, contexts and everyday realities of small-holder farming communities across India and Kenya. From understanding how farmers seek and share agricultural knowledge, to developing language and speech technologies and approaches for culturally grounded evaluation of models, Gecko brings together research, design and engineering to rethink how AI systems are created. This video follows the multi-disciplinary project from field research to the development and evaluation of the MMCT and Paza models, Pazabench and the playbooks Atlas, Paza and Vibhasha which serve as practical guidelines
